Dear Participant,
We are researchers at TU Wien conducting a scientific study on personalized news
recommendations. This longitudinal study consists of 4 phases and is open to participants
recruited via Prolific and students.
Purpose: We study how personalized news recommendation algorithms affect
reading behaviour, topic diversity, and information consumption. Your participation helps
improve recommendation systems and contributes insights to the scientific community.
Data collected: your reading preferences and article selections within the
study; survey responses; interaction data (e.g. which articles you viewed); and your
Prolific/custom ID or student ID, depending on your participation mode, used to
identify your study record and contact you for follow-up phases where applicable.
Use of data: For research and publication, your data will be used in
anonymized form only. For Prolific/custom participants, Prolific/custom IDs and other
directly identifying information will be removed or replaced. For students, the student ID is used to
check whether bonus points can be granted; beyond this check, study data will only be
available and used in anonymized form. Results will only be reported in a way that does not
allow individual participants to be identified.
Voluntariness: Participation is entirely voluntary. If you are
participating as a student, it has no effect on your course participation,
assessment, or grading.
Legal basis: Processing is based on your consent pursuant to Art. 6
para. 1 lit. a DSGVO/GDPR. You may withdraw your consent at any time with effect for the
future. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal. Under
Art. 89 para. 1 DSGVO/GDPR, data collected for scientific research may be stored for an
unlimited period under appropriate safeguards.
Your rights: You have the right to information, rectification, deletion,
restriction of processing, objection, and data portability. You also have the right to
lodge a complaint with the Austrian Data Protection Authority: dsb@dsb.gv.at.
